Every year brings — along with crops, allergies and insects — a new yield of stars, trends and cultural upsets.

Some will last, some will be fleeting. Among the stars, there are babes, beefcake and at least one bafflingly-popular geek.

For them, this year will mark the time in which they achieve the popularity that has thus far eluded them.

They will be the faces you’ll be seeing a lot more of in coming months — indicating the future of, not just their careers, but of what consumers should expect in the worlds of movies, music and pop culture.

An iconic role can make or break a career still in its infancy. For every Hugh Jackman , there’s a George Lazenby, who faltered as James Bond. In which category Gerard Butler, the star of Dracula 2000 ultimately ends up is anyone’s guess, but as the titular character in the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, due in December, he is assured a worldwide audience waiting to see if the mask fits him.
