Ex-postie’s red letter year

January 3, 2006 | Beowulf & Grendel News

A SCOT who gave up his job as a postman to chase his Hollywood dream is being tipped as the movie star of 2006.

Tony Curran, 37, is lined up to appear in a series of blockbusters.

Last year the Glaswegian, whose film credits include Gladiator and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, settled in Los Angeles and obtained a US work permit.

Now he will be seen in big budget productions such as Underworld: Evolution and Miami Vice. He will also star alongside George Clooney and Cate Blanchett in Second World War murder mystery, The Good German, and fellow Scot Gerard Butler in the Norse epic Beowulf and Grendel.

Curran said: “I never imagined that I would be doing all this. I have always thought that I was blessed just being able to work. I never take the opportunities that I get for granted.”

Curran, who used to get up at 5am to deliver mail around the Clarkston and Mount Florida areas, begins this year alongside Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nighy and Sir Derek Jacobi in the $100million werewolf and vampire horror Underworld:

Evolution. He said: “In the film I am a hybrid, a little bit of both vampire and werewolf, complete with wings and hair. Before we started filming, I watched all the old horror movies to do some homework.”

Part of the filming involved flying sequences and aerial combat with sexy vampire Kate Beckinsale.

Curran will also be seen opposite Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as a kidnapper in Miami Vice. He got the role after auditioning on video for director Michael Mann, of Heat fame.

Then in Beowulf And Grendel, Gerard Butler is cast as the legendary hero Beowulf while Curran is his henchman.

The Hollywood world of which he is now a part is a lifetime away from his Glasgow roots. He said:

“Although I love it here in LA, there are other things that I miss, like the Highlands. Every time I go back I get in a car and drive up the West Coast of Scotland.

“And I do actually also miss the rain a bit because I burn like a lobster in the Californian sun. I also miss Celtic because I’m still a season ticket holder. And I do miss a bit of haggis.”
