Hollywood comes to Coventry

Warwick Arts Centre’s November and December Film Season includes a weekend of incredible cinema events and special guests.

On Thursday 25 November there’s a special preview screening of Dear Frankie, by Warwickshire film maker, Shona Auerbach. Shona is an award-winning short film director and this, her first feature, got a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, and it won the audience award for best international feature at the LA Film Festival. Shona will be attending the Warwick Arts Centre screening to discuss her film with the audience. Dear Frankie is on general release in the UK in January 2005.

The next day, esteemed Hollywood director, producer and actor Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Mask, The Sopranos) will be visiting the Coventry venue to talk about his movies and his new book, Who the Hell In It? which is published in November by Faber Books, and reminiscences of the Hollywood greats with whom he has worked – from Bogart & Bacall, John Wayne and James Stewart. This follows a screening of his most recent movie, The Cat Meow, which stars Eddie Izzard and Kirstin Dunst.

Finally, on Saturday 27 November, the annual all day Shakespeare on Screen event will take place, and promises another insight into the world of cinema.

The day opens with a very special preview of The Merchant of Venice, which is on general release in December, and stars Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons. Following the preview there will be an opportunity to take part in a discussion with the director and adaptor, Michael Radford (Il Postino, White Mischief, Nineteen Eighty-Four). The day also includes seven silent shorts of the earliest Shakespeare films accompanied by composer Laura Rossi piano quintet.

In addition there are screenings of great new titles such as My Summer of Love, De-Lovely, Finding Neverland, Super Size Me, Millions and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, as well as the last ever public 3D screening of the 50s sci-fi classic It Came from Outer Space. This rare event is made even more special as the screening is accompanied by a live improvised soundtrack by cult band Pere Ubu.
