Den of Thieves director Christian Gudegast confirmed a sequel was planned, but it still hasn’t released. Here’s what we know about Den of Thieves 2.
Here’s everything we know about Den of Thieves 2. In 2018, Den of Thieves nearly tripled its budget at the box office and became a modern heist classic. Director Christian Gudegast confirmed a sequel was in development shortly after the movie released, but there hasn’t been much movement on it ever since.
Den of Thieves wasn’t an enormous critical success, but it did resonate with moviegoers. Set in the bank robbery capital of the world, Los Angeles, Gudegast’s heist film has all the bravado of Heat (another L.A.-based classic) and the narrative complexity of The Usual Suspects. Gudegast made the film as authentic as possible, using sources from the LAPD, the military, and a former leader of the Hell’s Angels. Gerard Butler stars as Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien, a detective for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. After focusing his attention on a local named Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), he attempts to prevent a heist that seems inevitable. In a final act twist, a bartender named Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) is revealed to be the true mastermind, which sets up the Den of Thieves 2 storyline in London.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Gudegast teased Den of Thieves 2 by saying, “The hard work is done. It’s all structured, it’s all outlined, I have the whole story. It’s just a matter of putting pen to page.” Then in 2019, Den of Thieves 2 was officially titled Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Here’s everything we know about the anticipated sequel.
When Den Of Thieves 2 Could Release
Few details have been announced about a possible release date for Den of Thieves 2; however, there have been rumors that production commenced in 2019. Given that the original film was in development for a full 14 years, it’s possible that Gudegast and company are taking their time, especially since so much has changed due to COVID-19. If it’s true that Den of Thieves 2 already entered production, then it’s possible that it could release sometime in summer 2021, give or take a few months.
What Den Of Thieves 2’S Story Will Be About
Based on what Gudegast initially told Screen Rant, Den of Thieves 2 will take place all over Europe. For the central storyline, Big Nick will chase after Donnie, who’s now associated with the Pink Panther Mafia, an international network of jewel thieves. As revealed in Den of Thieves, Donnie works as a London bartender near a diamond exchange. For the sequel, Gudegast revealed that Big Nick will be chased down by an unknown person or organization, resulting in a mashup off subplots that will broaden the storyline across Europe.
As of now, we know that Den of Thieves 2 was directly inspired by the films Gomorrah, Suburra, Sexy Beast, and Ronin. In addition, the sequel will apparently take place in London, Belgium, Marseilles, the Cote d’Azur, and Montenegro. Complete details probably haven’t been revealed because of cast negotiations and a delayed production process. But it does appear that everything is in place for Den of Thieves 2, at least in terms of story and structure.
