“Avatar†star Sam Worthington is set to join Gerard Butler in Relativity Studios’ crime drama “Den of Thieves,†an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
Christian Gudegast will direct from his own screenplay. The heist movie follows a notorious crew of bank robbers who target the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles, right under the nose of a rogue sheriff’s deputy.
Representatives for Worthington did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Mark Canton and Butler’s G-Base producing partner Alan Siegel are teaming with Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh and Tucker Tooley to produce the film, which Butler will executive produce with Chris Bender and JC Spink.
Relativity’s Robbie Brenner will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. The film will begin shooting in January in Los Angeles and Puerto Rico.
Canton recently worked with Worthington on the Jennifer Aniston drama “Cake,†in which the Aussie actor played her grieving love interest. Canton is currently in post-production on Lionsgate’s new Vin Diesel tentpole “Last Witch Hunter,†coming out in October.
Worthington next stars alongside Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal in Universal’s “Everest,†and he’ll soon be seen opposite Brit Marling in Daniel Barber’s period thriller “The Keeping Room.†He also recently wrapped Jonathan Mostow’s action-thriller “Hunter’s Prayer.â€
Worthington, who will return to star in James Cameron’s “Avatar†sequels, is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content and attorneys Steve Warren and Dan Fox.
