Director:
Zack Snyder (Dawn Of The Dead)
Story:
Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, “300” concerns the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians.
What I Liked About it:
* Visually, its one of the greatest films of recent memory.
* Gerard Butler is finally given a film to show off his star power. He commands the screen.
* It’s also good to see Lena Headle do something interesting for a change. She showed promise in Gossip (2000) and The Parole Officer (2001), but after The Cave, Brothers Grimm and Imagine Me & You, I had my doubts.
* The battles are so much fun. It kind of reminded me of a video game, wave after wave of villains, getting more and more powerful each time.
* “And the Academy Award for Best Special Effects goes to…”
* It’s so entertaining!
What I Didn’t Like About It:
* It’s REALLY over the top, which is not always a bad thing, but it can sometimes get on your nerves.
* There are too many rousing victory speeches!
The Verdict:
While the old complaint ‘style-over-substance’ does apply here, there are so many mindless action films that don’t contain any substance whatsoever. 300 strives for something a little more than that. Go, watch and enjoy!
