2005 GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS
Leonardo DiCaprio is flying high and Clint Eastwood came out slugging, but it looks as if Alexander Payne’s Sideways is this year’s Lost in Translation.
In announcing their contenders for the 2005 Golden Globes, the 90-odd members of the Hollywood Foreign Press clearly favoured Payne’s story of male mid-life crisis over big studio releases such as The Aviator, Closer, Ray and Phantom of the Opera.
It’s a nice gesture, but Sideways will lose to the big boys (and girls) in the final voting in January.
There were a few surprises and some glaring omissions this year.
To their credit, the HFP widened their scope by nominating Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet for the spring release Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind rather than their current flicks Lemony Snicket’… and Finding Neverland.
The HFP also recognized the fine work Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd did in the underappreciated De-Lovely, but giving Kevin Spacey a nod for his embarrassing attempt to channel Bobby Darin in Beyond the Sea is laughable.
Glamour and celebrity, not performance is the reason Nicole Kidman got nominated for her self-indulgent turn in Birth.
Renee Zellweger does not deserve a Golden Globe nomination for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason because it is the same performance she gave in the original.
If anyone deserves an acting nomination for Phantom of the Opera, it’s Gerard Butler, who plays the opera ghost and not Emmy Rossum.
It’s great to see Javier Bardem recognized for his Spanish-language performance in The Sea Inside, but if he’s in the best actor category at the expense of Gael Garcia Burnal for Bad Education, it’s a grave oversight.
The fact Uma Thurman finds herself in the running for a dramatic Globe shows how few really great female performances there were this past year.
