Emily tips Glasgow as top UK film spot

April 1, 2004 | Dear Frankie News, Uncategorized

ACTRESS Emily Mortimer is tipping Glasgow as a potential film capital of Britain.

Emily, star of hits such as The 51st State, is in the city filming the family drama Natural History. It’s her second film in a row here – last year she starred opposite Ewan McGregor in Young Adam.

She says there’s a good reason for that.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the last two things I’ve done have been up here,” says Emily, daughter of Rumpole creator John Mortimer. “Glasgow is a hive of activity as far as the film industry in Britain is concerned.”

Emily thinks the city’s creative spark is hard to beat.

“It seems that people here who are making films are incredibly devoted to what they’re doing,” she adds. “There’s just a real vibrancy to the film scene in Glasgow.”
In Natural History, Emily is the mother of a young deaf boy played by nine-year-old Jack McElhone. For years she has told the boy his father is missing at sea.

However, when a ship docks with the same name as the one she made up, she is forced to hire nomadic sailor Gerard Butler to play the boy’s dad for a day.
